Happy (Day After) Thanksgiving!

I have a lot to be thankful for. I am at a better place in my life than I have ever been. I am happier than I have been in decades, I am enjoying the simple (and challenging!) pleasures of parenthood, and I am exercising my creative freedom in new ways.

Do I look back with regret or disgust at where I was when I was at my least happy? Of course not! My past endeavors are some of the building blocks that make who I am today. I am grateful for all I have experienced.

I was in the tech industry right on the tail of the dot-com bubble, and then was a delivery boy and janitor for years after that. For years I sacrificed my own happiness for that of another, lying to myself about it the whole time. I have gained perspective through trials, depression, financial austerity, and emotional emptiness.

While they may be trivial compared to some, my experiences help me empathize with those who do suffer. Never again will I look down upon another human being simply because of their profession or socioeconomic situation.

I am thankful for the inconveniences and stumbling blocks in my life over which I had to climb to get here. I am thankful for all the people in my life, be they friends, enemies, or something else, and wish all of them the ability to find the kind of happiness that I have.

If you have never heard the phrase "attitude of gratitude", check it out. It seems paradoxical that being grateful for what you already have might help you attain more, but it seems to work. I'm still learning, but I know I'm grateful.

If that isn't what Thanksgiving is about, then I don't know what it is.
