Happy Accidents

Last week, our web guru Rob Dolst brought in a vegetarian breakfast casserole based on this recipe. When describing the recipe, he made an off-hand comment about the first person to discover that cooking a mixture of eggs and milk would cause it to rise into a fluffy delight. Perhaps this person already knew that cooking eggs made them more palatable (though I myself have enjoyed the occasional raw egg). But at some point, they realized that they could whip eggs and milk together, cook them in an oven or over a fire, and watch as they rose into a glorious souffle.

Before this happened, it was likely that the idea of mixing the product of a chicken with the product of a cow and heating it up would have seemed insane. Perhaps it would have been thought of as a waste of both the eggs and the milk. Maybe it was simply seen as disgusting.

Regardless, these days, it is perfectly normal to create souffles, casseroles, quiches, cakes, and other such delicacies and nobody thinks twice about it. But what other combinations, new ideas, or unorthodox ways of thinking are out there right now, ready to be discovered? Maybe you have a "crazy" idea that everybody else derides, mocks, or simply laughs at. Maybe you know somebody else who does.

True innovation and strides forward come from someone being the first person to discover a new way of thinking, a new combination of old ideas or materials, or that old rubric about "thinking outside the box" (which along with "innovation" has unfortunately become a cliché).

Here's to all the free-thinkers, innovators, and outside-the-box thinkers! You will meet resistance, but don't let that stop you! Mix those ideas. The worst that could happen is that you might break a few eggs.
